AFRO MBPP CAMPAIGN

Background

The “Make Big Polluters Pay” global campaign was launched in 2019 during COP 25, following the publication of the “Call for Climate Justice” in the previous year. A coordination committee of diverse and globally representative organizations was established to spearhead the campaign’s efforts. Through extensive coordinated research and evidence-based analysis, the committee developed “The Liability Roadmap” as a foundational document to guide the campaign’s actions. The primary objective of the campaign is to hold those primarily responsible for the climate crisis accountable for their actions and seek reparations for corporate abuses, human rights violations, and environmental destruction.

The Africa MBPP Campaign was operationalized in May 2020 with a series of actions, including calling out Shell,  for its net-zero scam strategies and leveraging global MBPP tools such as the Liability Roadmap and the “Big Con”, an expository report uncovering the misleading false solutions and industry-led greenwashing. This initiative was driven by the imperative to build movement power, raise awareness among the media about climate reporting, and counter the false narratives propagated by big polluters on the continent and the world over.

Our mission is to drive the “Make Big Polluters Pay” campaign in Africa with a commitment to accountability, justice, and solidarity. Through strategic actions, advocacy, and partnership building, we aim to hold those responsible for the climate crisis accountable for their actions, seek reparations for corporate abuses, and amplify the voices of frontline communities. We strive to challenge false narratives perpetuated by big polluters, empower movements, sensitize the media on climate reporting, and create a platform for collective action towards a sustainable and just future for all in Africa.
